Honoring Our Pets Through Día de los Muertos Traditions

We know that the bond between people and their pets is profound and enduring. In honor of Día de los Muertos traditions, teammates came together to honor the cherished animals who have shaped their lives, creating meaningful spaces to remember the pets who will forever hold a place in their hearts.

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican tradition dedicated to remembering and celebrating the lives of loved ones who have passed away. A central part of the observance is the creation of an ofrenda, or altar, where photos, keepsakes and meaningful items are displayed to honor and remember those being celebrated.

This year, teammates at Veterinary Surgical Specialists, Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital and Pet Emergency & Specialty Center of Marin created pet-focused ofrendas to celebrate the lives of their beloved companions. Adorned with photos, mementos and heartfelt tributes, each display served as a reminder that while our pets may no longer be by our sides, the love and memories they leave behind remain with us forever.

The initiative provided teammates with an opportunity to share stories, reflect on cherished memories and recognize the lasting impact their pets have had on their lives. It was also a meaningful way to acknowledge a truth familiar to everyone in veterinary medicine: the relationships we build with animals leave an imprint on our hearts that never fades.

As teammates gathered around the ofrendas, they not only honored their own companions but also reflected on the many patients they have cared for throughout their careers. Each animal represents a unique story, a special bond and a life that touched the people around them.
