From Patient to Pet: Garden State Veterinary Specialists Eatontown Veterinarian Gives Cat a Second Chance

Franklin’s journey from New York City street cat to beloved family pet is a powerful reminder of the difference one act of compassion can make. This Adopt-a-Cat Month, we’re proud to share his story.

After being brought into a shelter by a good Samaritan, Franklin was found suffering from a neck wound. Despite multiple treatments over three weeks, the wound would not heal. With few options remaining, he was scheduled to be euthanized.

That’s when Dr. Kevin Cali, veterinarian and surgery resident at Garden State Veterinary Specialists Eatontown, stepped in.

“When we learned about his situation, we knew we had to try,” Dr. Cali recalls.

Dr. Cali made the three-hour drive to Queens to pick Franklin up and brought him directly to the hospital for evaluation and treatment. The team immediately got to work caring for his wound and developing a treatment plan.

Despite everything he had endured, Franklin’s sweet personality quickly made him a favorite among the hospital staff. As his treatment progressed, it became clear that Franklin had already found his forever home, with none other than the veterinarian who rescued him. Dr. Cali brought Franklin home and he instantly became part of the family.

“He slept in bed with us the very first night,” says Dr. Cali. “He hasn’t missed a night since.”

With dedicated care, Franklin’s neck wound eventually healed. As part of his ongoing care, the hospital’s dentistry team also diagnosed him with a rare condition called Menrath’s ulcers, allowing him to continue receiving specialized treatment.

Through every challenge, Franklin has remained the sweet, affectionate cat who captured everyone’s heart at Garden State Veterinary Specialists Eatontown. Today, he is thriving in the home of the veterinarian who saved him, a daily reminder to Dr. Cali and his family of the life-changing power of pet adoption and second chances.
